Identification of wood species

Wood    Organic Materials

The identification of wood species can be an important issue, both for authentication and research purposes.

The MSMAP Laboratory works in collaboration with a partner laboratory to help you determine the nature of the wood used to make your objects.

The innovative analytical method used in this partnership is particularly suitable for art objects because it can be applied to a small sample or directly on the object surface.

Why ?

The results obtained make it possible to validate an origin of the wood (tropical, temperate, endemic or non-endemic, etc.) which can be very useful in the context of authentication or to help in the knowledge of commercial circuits in the context of research (museums, archaeologists, etc.).

Techniques and materials used ?

  • Scalpel, razor blade and sandpaper to reveal anatomical details
  • Hand magnifying glass magnification X15
  • Steroscopic microscope magnification X45
  • Microscope magnification X500
  • Wood lamp (UV) to highlight fluorescence in certain genera

+ More

The radiocarbon dating (14C) adapts perfectly to this material and makes it possible to obtain the date of felling the tree.
